BIM-Based Information Management for Construction Site Coordination: Development and Application of a Practical Framework

Abstract

The construction industry is undergoing a significant digital transformation, with Building Information Modelling (BIM) increasingly evolving from a three-dimensional modelling methodology into an integrated approach for information management and project delivery. During the construction phase, however, project information is often distributed among multiple stakeholders, documents, models, schedules and communication channels, potentially resulting in coordination issues, information loss, outdated information, delays and rework.

This thesis investigates how BIM-based information management can support and improve construction site coordination and project control. The research focuses on the integration of BIM principles, Common Data Environment (CDE), structured project information and construction management processes within a practical site coordination workflow. Particular attention is given to the relationship between BIM information, construction activities, technical documentation, project schedules, coordination procedures and site execution.

The study adopts a practical case-study methodology. An existing construction information and coordination workflow is analysed in order to identify critical information-management issues and areas for improvement. Based on this analysis, a BIM-based information management framework is developed, defining the flow of information, stakeholder responsibilities, information requirements, coordination procedures and connections between digital project information and construction activities. The proposed framework is subsequently applied to selected construction activities to assess its effectiveness in supporting coordination, information traceability and project control.

The results aim to demonstrate how BIM can be used not only as a modelling and design tool but also as a practical project-management instrument during the construction phase. The research provides a framework that can support more structured information exchange, improved coordination between project stakeholders and more effective management of construction activities.
