Technical Translator: German to English (Heavy Vehicle Manuals)

German → English Technical Writer / Translator for Heavy Vehicle Operating Manuals

We are looking for an experienced technical writer and German-to-English translator to translate and professionally adapt operating manuals for specialised heavy transport equipment, including silo semi-trailers, tankers and related systems.

This is not a straightforward word-for-word translation project.

The original manuals are in German and contain technical operating instructions, component descriptions, pneumatic systems, warnings, safety instructions and equipment diagrams. The final English manuals must read as though they were originally written in professional technical English.

What we are looking for

The successful freelancer must:

Be fully fluent in German and English, with excellent written English.

Have proven experience in technical writing and technical translation.

Ideally have experience with commercial vehicles, trailers, mechanical engineering, pneumatic systems, pressure vessels, industrial equipment or machinery.

Understand the importance of precise terminology in operating and safety documentation.

Be able to interpret the German meaning and rewrite it into clear, natural and technically correct English, rather than translating sentence by sentence.

Maintain consistent terminology throughout the manual.

Preserve all technical meaning, warnings, references, numbering and document structure.

Query terminology where the correct technical interpretation is unclear rather than guessing.

Important: AI / Machine Translation

We are specifically looking for a human technical writer/translator, not an automated translation service.

AI or translation software may be used as a supporting tool in your workflow, but raw or lightly edited AI/machine-translated text will not be accepted.

We have already reviewed translations that were grammatically understandable but retained German sentence structures, unnatural terminology and overly literal translations. This is not suitable for professional operating manuals, particularly where safety instructions are involved.

The finished English must be professionally reviewed, technically accurate and edited by you.

Short Sample Required

Shortlisted candidates will be asked to complete a brief unpaid sample translation before the project is awarded.

The sample will be limited in length and is purely for assessment purposes. It will allow us to evaluate:

Accuracy against the German source

Natural, professional technical English

Appropriate technical terminology

Safety-critical wording

Consistency and attention to detail

Whether the English reads like an original professional operating manual rather than a literal translation
