Project description
We are the owners of Balnaclash Cattery, a family-run cattery. We have an existing Squarespace 7.1 site, logo and brand guide. We need an experienced Squarespace designer to create a warm, professional and easy-to-use website that helps cat owners feel comfortable enquiring and booking.
This is a Squarespace design-and-build project. We are looking for someone with live Squarespace 7.1 sites in their portfolio, not only Figma mock-ups or experience with other platforms. We will want to see examples.
We have a clear page plan and will provide final wording after the main design direction is agreed. During design, use short neutral placeholder copy with labels such as “[Final introduction to be added]”. Temporary AI-generated images may be used to help us judge layout and mood. They must be realistic images of cats in a believable cattery setting, clearly treated as placeholders, and replaced with approved real photographs before the website goes live.
Pages
• Home
• Our Cattery
• Your Cat’s Stay
• Prices
• About Us
• Contact & Find Us
• Footer links: Boarding Terms, Privacy Notice and Cookie Settings
Work required
• Work directly in our existing Squarespace 7.1 site as a draft.
• Create the homepage design first and get our approval on the visual direction before building the remaining pages.
• Build the six pages using the structure in this brief and clearly marked copy placeholders.
• Set up navigation, footer, responsive layouts, contact form and Book Now links.
• Use our existing logo and brand guide. Do not redesign the logo or brand.
• Use temporary AI image placeholders only as described below. Keep an asset list so we can replace them easily.
• Make the site straightforward for us to edit in Squarespace after handover.
• Include basic page titles, slugs, mobile checks, link/form testing and a short handover.
• Do not publish, connect the public domain or change domain, billing or account settings.
• SEO Optimisation required to ensure appears on first page
• Must optimize on Mobile, Desktop and Tablet
Proposal requirements
Please include:
• Links to at least two live websites you personally designed and built in Squarespace 7.1. State your role and what you completed on each.
• At least one example of a small service, hospitality, pet-care or other trust-led business, if available.
• A brief note about how you would approach the homepage and mobile experience for this project.
• Fixed price, inclusions, timeline, revision rounds and any extras.
• Confirmation you can work via a Squarespace contributor invitation without account-owner passwords.
• Whether you plan to use custom CSS or code, and why.
2. Brand and design direction
Balnaclash is a family-run cattery at our home in the West Lothian countryside. The site should feel warm, calm, personal, trustworthy and professional.
Use the existing logo and brand guide:
• Forest green: #1F502E
• Sage green: #7A8F72
• Antique gold: #B08A3E
• Warm ivory: #F8F3E8
• Warm taupe: #C8BDA7
• Playfair Display headings; Lato body text
Use generous but practical spacing, clear headings, readable text and simple buttons. Use forest green for main buttons and navigation; reserve antique gold for small accents. Do not stretch, recreate or recolour the logo.
Design priorities
1. Make it immediately clear this is a cat boarding cattery in West Lothian.
2. Make the site feel personal and reassuring through the real owners, clear information and genuine cattery imagery.
3. Make prices, care details and booking options easy to find.
4. Keep the pages simple and easy to use on a phone.
5. Use a visible Book Now button and a softer Contact / Ask a Question option.
3. Sitemap and page content plan
Use these six pages. Do not add separate Gallery, Reviews, Food, FAQ or What’s Included pages. Place those elements within the most relevant pages.
Home: hero with business, location and reassurance; cattery preview; care highlights; owner introduction; price summary; location; optional reviews once approved. Actions: Book Now / Contact Us
Our Cattery: accommodation overview; family-sized sharing; comfort details; photo gallery. Actions: Explore the Cattery / Book Now.
Your Cat’s Stay: individual care; food; medication; updates; what to bring; vaccinations; veterinary arrangements; FAQs. Actions: Read Boarding Terms / Contact Us / Book Now.
Prices: daily rates; Christmas and New Year supplements; chargeable days; minimum stay; payment and cancellation summary. Actions: Book Now / Ask about dates.
About Us: Intro to owners; family-run background; previously Ali Cats Cattery, now Balnaclash Cattery under new owners; approach to care. Actions: Contact Us / Book Now.
Contact & Find Us: contact form; approved contact details; location and directions; what happens next. Actions: Send a Message / Book Now.
Copy placeholders
Use concise temporary text only to demonstrate hierarchy, line length and page flow. Keep these editable placeholders visible to us in the draft:
• [Homepage headline to be supplied}
• [Short introduction to be supplied]
• [Section copy to be supplied]
• [Approved contact/location details to be added]
Keep fixed labels where useful, such as Book Now, Prices, Our Cattery, Your Cat’s Stay and Contact Us. I will provide the finished wording after reviewing the design.
4. Confirmed business details for layout
These details can be used to size and design the relevant sections. Do not turn them into long promotional copy without approval.
Prices
• 1 cat: £29 per day
• 2 cats sharing: £40 per day
• 3 cats sharing: £50 per day
• 4 cats sharing: £60 per day
• Christmas Day and New Year’s Day: +£15 per day
• Boxing Day, 31 December and 2 January: +£10 per day
• Heating is included as required.
• Arrival and departure days are chargeable.
• Usual minimum stay: four days; five days for bookings covering Christmas, New Year and Easter weekend.
• Deposit: 25%. Balance due by arrival unless agreed otherwise. Bookings made within seven days of arrival are payable in full at booking.
Care information
• Family-sized accommodation is available for cats from the same household sharing where appropriate.
• A selection of popular wet and dry foods is provided. Owners may bring their cat’s usual, specialist or veterinary food.
• Photos and updates can be shared during stays. Do not promise a set frequency.
• Vaccination requirements and veterinary evidence are set out in the Boarding Terms.
• Agreed oral or topical medication may be accepted. Routine injectable medication is not accepted.
• The cattery’s appointed vet is The Pet Hospital Ltd, Livingston.
• Operational Hours
5. Temporary imagery and real photography
Temporary AI imagery is acceptable in the unpublished design draft to help us assess colour, layout and mood.
AI image requirements
• Images should look like natural, high-quality photographs, not illustrations or obvious synthetic imagery.
• Show a real-looking cat resting or sitting in a believable clean cattery environment, such as a boarding pen with a bed, shelf or hideaway.
• Keep the setting modest, calm and plausible for a small UK cattery.
• Do not depict a luxury hotel, veterinary clinic, home living room, outdoor garden or facilities that could be mistaken for confirmed features of Balnaclash.
• Do not make the cat look distressed, trapped or posed unnaturally.
• Label each file and its draft placement.
• Keep all AI images easy to replace; do not bake them into backgrounds or use them as the logo.
Real photographs to plan for
Prioritise placeholder images: the actual exterior; clean accommodation from more than one angle; beds and hideaways; cats in the accommodation with owner permission; feeding set-up; enrichment; Owners; and a safe arrival/carrier detail. The designer should provide an image list with suggested crop and placement.
6. Squarespace build and access
• Use the existing Squarespace 7.1 site and its normal editable sections.
• Build the pages and responsive layouts in Squarespace; Figma-only delivery is not sufficient.
• Use a restrained, modern editorial layout with the existing brand.
• Use landscape images for accommodation, a wide hero image, and square crops for cards where needed.
• Check the site at desktop and phone widths. Ensure text, buttons and navigation remain clear and easy to use.
• Use a Squarespace contributor invitation
• Do not request access to personal email, Google Workspace, Revelation Pets, QuickBooks, banking, payment accounts, domain registrar or personal devices.
• Keep the website unpublished and the public domain disconnected until owners approve it.
7. Content, privacy and launch restrictions
• Create Space for copy re license details to be added
• Create links for the Boarding Terms, Privacy Notice or cookie wording.
• Ensure analytics, advertising pixels or new tracking can be enabled once approved
• Do not publish the site or connect the public domain. Final copy, real photos, contact details, booking link and licence wording must be added and approved and owners may decide to do that themselves.
8. Milestones and acceptance
Suggested milestones:
1. Homepage direction: homepage layout and visual style in the Squarespace draft, with temporary copy and images.
2. Page designs: remaining page structures, navigation and footer using labelled copy placeholders.
3. Functional build: responsive refinements, contact form, Book Now links and approved basic SEO fields.
4. Review and handover: revisions, image replacement list, page-editing notes and access removal after approval.
