I have a set of operational worksheets in Excel that now need the stability and scalability of Microsoft SQL Server. Your task is to turn those flat files into a properly structured database and leave me with a working environment that still plays nicely with Excel.
Here’s what I need you to do:
• Examine the current Excel sheets (a few thousand rows each, no exotic formulas).
• Propose and create a normalized schema in SQL Server, complete with primary/foreign keys, sensible data types, and indexing where it matters.
• Provide the T-SQL scripts to build the schema and seed it with a small test data set taken from the spreadsheets.
• Set up an ODBC or native connector so I can refresh and write data from Excel to the new tables without manual imports.
• Document the design choices in a concise markdown or Word file so I can maintain it later.
Acceptance criteria:
– Database builds cleanly from your scripts on SQL Server 2019.
– All original Excel columns are accounted for, with no data loss.
– I can open a sample workbook you supply, click Refresh, and see data pull from the new tables.
No reporting or analysis is needed right now—just solid database design and the Excel link-up. If you’re comfortable with T-SQL, Excel’s data tools, and a bit of normalization theory, this should be a fast, focused engagement.
