I want a complete Chess game built in Android Studio with clean, well-commented code so that I can study and extend it later. The project must implement every official rule of chess: legal piece movement, check and checkmate recognition, castling (both sides), pawn promotion to any major piece, and the ability to undo the last move.

The look and feel should follow a classic user-interface style, pairing naturally with a traditional wooden board and pieces. While I prefer that timeless aesthetic, the architecture should be flexible enough that I can swap in alternative themes later if I choose.

Gameplay has to feel smooth and professional. Fast, responsive touch controls are essential, and performance should remain solid even on older Android devices. Subtle animations are welcome as long as they never slow the game down.

I will open the project in the latest stable version of Android Studio, so please target a recent Android SDK and use either Kotlin or modern Java along with best-practice patterns (MVVM or similar, sensible resource organization, and clear separation between UI and game logic). Comment the critical parts of the engine—move validation, game-state evaluation, and UI interactions—so another developer can follow the flow without guesswork.

Deliverables
• Release-ready APK for testing on real devices
• Full Android Studio project with source code and assets
• Brief setup/read-me explaining build steps and how to change graphics or rules files

I will test the finished game for rule accuracy, stability, and UI polish before final approval.
