About projects
The short film is called WHERE I AM. This is an intimate and poetic visual art film exploring dementia through the fractured relationship between memory, time and identity.
Ella, an elderly woman living with dementia, sits at her kitchen table with her daughter, Maya. During an ordinary conversation, Ella begins speaking about her childhood as though it is happening in the present. Her mother is still calling her from the garden. She is still the little girl running barefoot through the grass. She is still dancing, falling in love and living moments that happened decades ago.
As Ella’s conversation continues, the boundaries between past and present begin to disappear. Her childhood self appears within her present-day world, memories unfold around her, and moments from different stages of her life exist simultaneously. While she struggles to remember Maya’s name and the events of the previous day, memories from long ago remain intensely alive.
Through mirrors, photographs, sound, movement and fragmented imagery, the audience is gradually drawn inside Ella’s perception of time. What initially appears to be confusion becomes something more complex: a world where memory is not simply lost, but transformed.
As Maya searches for the mother she remembers, Ella searches for the little girl she once was.
In the final moments, Ella may no longer remember her daughter’s name, but she recognises something deeper.
