Research Software Engineer
NSF SBIR Phase I Research Project
Position Type: Temporary Research Appointment
Location: Remote, United States
Duration: Approximately eight calendar months within the proposed 12-month Phase I project
Provisional Personnel Budget: $88,000 for the eight-month appointment, subject to final employment-cost reconciliation
Reports To: Principal Investigator, with technical coordination by the Software Implementation Lead
Funding Status: Contingent upon NSF SBIR Phase I award
Project Overview
Sentinel Skills Systems, Inc. is developing an uncertainty-aware longitudinal clinical readiness inference system for high-acuity, low-occurrence (HALO) procedural skills.
The proposed NSF SBIR Phase I research will investigate whether longitudinal performance observations can support scientifically defensible estimates of clinical readiness, including deterioration, uncertainty, and insufficient evidence.
The initial research domain is emergency medical services (EMS), with particular relevance to procedural competency assessment and maintenance.
Position Purpose
The Research Software Engineer will be the principal hands-on developer responsible for implementing the experimental software and computational workflows required for Phase I technical feasibility testing.
The Engineer will work with the Principal Investigator, Software Implementation Lead, Statistical Modeling Lead, and Independent Generator Verification Lead to ensure that the research software is reproducible, auditable, and suitable for controlled scientific evaluation.
Primary Responsibilities
1. Implement a modular synthetic data generator consistent with the approved Synthetic Data Generation Specification.
2. Develop the longitudinal clinical readiness inference engine and its computational components.
3. Implement the five prespecified baseline algorithms for comparative evaluation.
4. Build reproducible experimental pipelines supporting internal testing and locked validation.
5. Maintain strict separation between synthetic data generation, inference, and independent verification functions.
6. Implement automated testing, version control, configuration management, and reproducibility controls.
7. Support the prespecified internal testing of at least 240 synthetic profiles and locked validation involving 720 synthetic profiles.
8. Implement structured data inputs and outputs, including readiness estimates, uncertainty indicators, and insufficient-evidence classifications.
9. Develop and document modular interfaces capable of future integration with a FileMaker Pro-based clinical readiness management application.
10. Maintain technical documentation, source-code repositories, testing records, and reproducible execution instructions.
11. Support technical review and acceptance testing by the Software Implementation Lead.
12. Assist the research team in preparing technical deliverables and reporting experimental results.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, applied mathematics, computational science, or a related discipline, or equivalent demonstrated professional experience.
• Strong programming experience in Python or another appropriate scientific computing language.
• Experience implementing numerical algorithms, simulation systems, or statistical computing workflows.
• Proficiency with version control, automated testing, and software documentation.
• Ability to develop modular, reproducible research software.
• Strong analytical and technical problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary researchers.
• U.S. citizenship is required due to government access requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with probabilistic modeling, Bayesian methods, or uncertainty quantification.
• Experience with Monte Carlo simulation and synthetic data generation.
• Familiarity with NumPy, SciPy, pandas, scikit-learn, or comparable scientific computing tools.
• Experience implementing research algorithms from mathematical specifications.
• Knowledge of scientific software verification and validation.
• Experience designing secure APIs or modular software integration interfaces.
• Prior involvement in federally funded research or scientific software development.
Clinical or EMS experience is helpful but not required.
Research Integrity and Independence
The Engineer must comply with prespecified experimental protocols, including restrictions on access to locked validation data and generator truth.
The Engineer will support independent verification but will not serve as the independent verifier of software components for which they are responsible.
Any changes to algorithms, validation procedures, or experimental thresholds must follow the approved research change-control process.
Expected Deliverables
• Documented synthetic data generator.
• Functional longitudinal readiness inference engine.
• Five implemented baseline algorithms.
• Automated testing and reproducibility framework.
• Controlled internal testing and validation workflows.
• Versioned data schemas and inference output specifications.
• Documented interface architecture for future FileMaker Pro integration.
• Technical documentation and research software handoff materials.
Scope Limitations
The position does not include development of a production FileMaker Pro application, operational deployment to an EMS agency, or clinical validation using actual patient outcomes.
These activities are outside the current Phase I research scope.
Compensation and Appointment
The provisional personnel budget is $88,000 for approximately eight calendar months. Final compensation, employment classification, workload, and benefits, if applicable, will be determined before appointment.
Employment is contingent upon NSF funding and execution of an appropriate employment agreement.
