We are having a custom rope swing constructed similar to the one shown in the first photo and would like a structural engineer to design and verify the installation.
The preliminary concept is:
• 6" ID Schedule 80 steel pipe
• Approximately 16' total pipe length
• Approximately 12' bend radius
• Approximately 4' of straight pipe extending into the ground
• The dimensions can be modified if you determine different dimensions would provide a safer or structurally better design.
• A rope will attach near the upper end of the curved pipe and function as a pendulum swing over the deep end of the pool.
• We would like the swing post located along the wall near the concrete steps, or otherwise on the side of the pool closest to the patio.
• We would also like a 3' tall jumping platform located near the top of the concrete steps, on the deck and level with the surrounding ground.
The primary question we need the engineering to answer is the proper relationship between the swing post and the jumping platform.
Specifically, we would like you to determine:
1. The exact recommended location for the pipe/post in relation to the jumping platform.
2. The optimal orientation/rotation of the curved pipe.
3. Whether the proposed 12' bend radius and 16' overall length are appropriate, or whether they should be modified.
4. The required embedment depth and concrete footing/foundation design.
5. The appropriate height, location and mechanism of the rope attachment point and range of proper rope length.
6. The maximum lateral width of the swing trajectory across the deep end of the pool.
7. The safest location and orientation of the swing so that the rider's trajectory remains within the intended portion of the deep end.
Ideally, we would like a scaled site plan showing the proposed location of the post and jumping platform, along with the swing's maximum trajectory envelope from a top-down view.
We are open to modifying the pipe dimensions, post location, platform location, attachment height, or orientation based on your engineering recommendations.
We can provide photos, measurements, pool dimensions, deck dimensions, and the location of the concrete steps and proposed platform.
