I need a patient guide to walk me, step by step, through the entire workflow of contributing to a Kubernetes-related Go project on my macOS machine. We will use one of the Rancher/RKE2/Rancher-dashboard GitHub repositories as the concrete example.
Here is the journey I’d like you to lead:
• Environment & tool setup on macOS
– VS Code with the Go and Kubernetes extensions, Delve debugger.
– Cloning the chosen Rancher repo and wiring up GOPATH / modules correctly.
• Building and running the project so I can see it working locally and understand its operation behind the scenes.
• Hands-on debugging: picking a small open issue or intentionally introducing a simple bug, attaching the VS Code debugger, stepping through the code, inspecting variables, and confirming the fix with unit or integration tests.
Because I am not from a developer background, please keep explanations jargon-free, show every command you type, and explain why each step matters. A live screen-share session is preferred, followed by written notes or a short screencast I can replay.
Acceptance criteria
– Project compiles and runs locally on my Mac.
– I can reproduce and fix the chosen bug while you watch.
– I leave with a concise cheat-sheet covering setup commands, common Go/K8s tasks, and VS Code debug shortcuts.
If this sounds like something you can teach clearly, I’d love to schedule the first session soon.
