Punjabi to English Subtitling Gig

We are a Mumbai-based media production company. We need freelance subtitlers to translate and subtitle Punjabi (and some in a mix of Punjabi-Hindi) documentary footage into English.

The footage: Interviews and observational documentary material featuring colloquial, rural spoken Punjabi, including regional dialect, idioms and slang.

You must:

Be a native Punjabi speaker who grew up speaking rural or village Punjabi
Write natural, fluent English (not literal word-for-word translation)
Have prior subtitling experience (documentary or film preferred)
Be comfortable with subtitle software (Subtitle Edit, Aegisub, Premiere, or similar)
Deliver clean .SRT files, with .VTT or other formats on request
Be able to handle about 50-60 minutes of content a day

Deliverables:

Time-coded English subtitles, synced to picture
Consistent handling of names, places and cultural terms
Flagged notes on unclear audio or ambiguous phrases

Standards: Max 2 lines per subtitle, around 42 characters per line, reading speed of 17 to 20 characters per second. We will share a style guide.

Test: Shortlisted subtitlers will subtitle a 3-minute clip, paid at a pre-decided rate, before we award the project.
