I am preparing an application for a doctoral programme in space weather and need a complete, publication-ready research proposal centred on Earth’s magnetosphere and ionosphere, with the clear aim of improving geomagnetic-storm forecasting.

The document should read as a persuasive, well-structured plan of study. Around 3,000–3,500 words is ideal, though you may suggest a length you feel suits the topic. Please cover:

• Background and significance of space-weather research, narrowing to the magnetosphere–ionosphere system and current forecasting limits.
• A concise but critical literature review demonstrating up-to-date knowledge of solar-terrestrial coupling.
• A problem statement, research questions and objectives that align with the goal of better storm prediction.
• A methodology section that discusses observational data (satellite and ground-based), modelling or data-driven techniques, and validation strategies—written so it can still be refined with a future supervisor.
• Expected scientific contributions, practical impacts on navigation, power grids or communication systems, plus a brief work plan and timeline.
• A properly formatted reference list (Harvard or APA).

Acceptance criteria
– Original, plagiarism-free text that passes Turnitin.
– At least 30 recent, peer-reviewed references.
– Clarity, logical flow and academic tone suitable for PhD admissions.

Deliver the proposal as an editable Word document and a word version. I’m happy to answer quick questions as you write, but I’m relying on your ability to synthesise complex space-weather literature into a compelling, feasible research plan.
