Project Title
Mechanical Design Tutor Required — Fusion 360/SolidWorks, CAD, FEA and BOM Support
Project Description
I am looking for an experienced mechanical design engineer or tutor to support me with a university mechanical engineering design project.
This is a tutoring and technical mentoring role. I will remain responsible for all design decisions, CAD work, calculations and the final submitted report. The freelancer should explain the engineering process, review my work, identify errors and demonstrate relevant techniques through live or recorded guidance.
The project involves developing an original and humorous “unnecessary invention”: a mechanically plausible product that solves a minor or largely non-existent everyday problem.
Support Required
The tutor should assist with:
Defining the engineering problem and project scope.
Developing measurable design specifications.
Brainstorming and comparing multiple concepts.
Reviewing concept sketches and the concept-selection matrix.
Planning the mechanical structure and component layout.
Teaching or demonstrating CAD modelling in Fusion 360 or SolidWorks.
Reviewing parts, assemblies and engineering drawings.
Advising on materials and suitable manufacturing processes.
Explaining relevant hand calculations and design verification.
Advising on FEA or motion simulation where appropriate.
Reviewing the bill of materials and cost calculations.
Reviewing FMEA, sustainability and maintenance considerations.
Providing feedback on the structure and technical clarity of the design portfolio.
Identifying weaknesses and recommending design improvements.
Expected Deliverables
Initial consultation and feasibility review.
Feedback on at least three concept ideas.
Guidance on selecting and developing one final concept.
CAD modelling demonstrations or annotated feedback on my CAD files.
Review notes for parts, assemblies and engineering drawings.
Guidance on calculations, simulation setup and result interpretation.
Review of the BOM, cost analysis and manufacturing plan.
Feedback on my draft portfolio.
Regular online meetings or screen-sharing sessions.
The freelancer must not write the final report or complete the assessed submission on my behalf. All advice must be clearly explained so that I can understand, reproduce and defend the work independently.
Preferred Software
Fusion 360 is preferred, particularly for macOS compatibility.
SolidWorks is also acceptable.
Microsoft Excel for the BOM, costing, FMEA and design matrices.
PowerPoint or Adobe InDesign experience would be helpful for portfolio presentation.
