Lead Embedded / Mechatronics Engineer — Smart Hardware Prototype (ESP32, CAD, IoT)
We are developing HappyMat™ Prototype #1, a smart interactive doormat with pressure/presence sensing, a digital display, addressable LED lighting, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth connectivity, camera/speaker/microphone components, embedded electronics and a custom physical structure.
We are looking for one experienced engineer (or a small team with one named lead engineer) to design the full prototype: architecture, firmware, mechanical CAD and a mobile-web control interface. The physical build will be done in California, USA, by our local technician, whom you will guide remotely.
Scope of work
Define the overall prototype architecture and select practical off-the-shelf modules to reduce cost and development time
Develop the ESP32 (or similar MCU) firmware: pressure/presence sensing, addressable LEDs, digital display, Wi-Fi and BLE, plus camera, speaker and microphone integration
Design the physical mat structure and electronics packaging in CAD: mounting for the display, camera, sensors, LEDs, controller and wiring; protect electronics from stepping loads; keep it serviceable; prepare parts for 3D printing or CNC
Build a simple mobile-friendly web control interface that communicates with the controller (REST / WebSocket / MQTT / BLE)
Prepare the BOM, wiring diagrams and step-by-step assembly instructions for our technician in California
Lead remote troubleshooting, integration testing and the final functional demonstration by video call
Deliver all firmware/source code, CAD files, drawings and configuration files
Requirements
Hands-on experience with real physical hardware, not software-only projects
ESP32 or similar MCU; Embedded C/C++; sensors; RGB/RGBW LEDs; displays; Wi-Fi/BLE
CAD skills: SolidWorks, Fusion 360 or equivalent; enclosure design and electronics packaging
Web interface development for hardware control (JavaScript/TypeScript or similar)
Camera/audio integration is a strong plus
Good written English; available for video calls during Pacific Time hours
Compensation
Fixed-price project, paid by milestones (architecture & BOM → firmware & interface → CAD → assembly support & final demo). Please propose your own fixed price for the complete scope and your timeline. The budget range shown is only a guide; your bid should reflect the full scope above.
How to apply
Begin your proposal with the word HAPPYMAT. Include:
Your fixed price (USD) for the full scope
Your estimated timeline (in days or weeks)
One physical electronic product or prototype you personally helped build: what exactly you designed, coded or built, with photos, video, CAD screenshots or GitHub links if available
If you are a company or team: the name of the engineer who will lead the work
NDA and IP assignment required before confidential HappyMat technical information is shared. All project files belong to the company
