We have already drafted step-by-step instructions for pulling every data element the IRS makes publicly available on private foundations (primarily the 990-PF filings and any related schedules). Your task is to follow those instructions, scrape or download the source files, clean and normalize the fields, and hand back a comprehensive Excel spreadsheet that lets me track overall trends and activity patterns across the sector.

The sheet should contain every variable the IRS releases—from asset balances and grant totals to officer compensation and investment income—so that I can slice it later by year, foundation size, program area, or any other dimension I choose. Please keep the column naming consistent with the IRS schema and include a brief data dictionary on the first tab.

Quality matters more than speed: missing values must be flagged, obvious OCR or parsing errors corrected, and numeric fields stored as numbers so they can be summed or charted immediately. If you need to use tools such as Python, R, OpenRefine, or SQL during your workflow, that’s fine; I only need the final cleaned Excel file plus the reproducible code or notebook you used.

Once the file passes a quick spot-check against the raw return PDFs or XML, I’ll release full payment (up to $3000 USD) and we can discuss optional follow-on work to visualize key metrics.
