I am looking for a highly skilled and detail‑oriented English proofreader for a long‑term collaboration. The immediate project involves proofreading and enhancing the quality of an English manuscript of approximately 60,000 to 65,000 words (around 260 pages in Word format), currently written in American English, which also includes Spanish examples and cultural references that should remain unchanged.
Important note: the manuscript also contains about 9,000 words in Spanish, used as examples and cultural references. These Spanish sections are not to be corrected or modified. The proofreading should focus exclusively on the English text.
We seek someone who not only has a sharp eye for grammar and spelling errors but can also elevate the readability of the text, with particular attention to punctuation (commas, periods, and sentence flow).
PLEASE NOTE THAT WE WILL ONLY CONSIDER APPLICATIONS THAT FOLLOW THE OUTLINED APPLICATION PROCESS.
Key Responsibilities:
Text Quality Enhancement: Beyond basic proofreading, your main task will be to significantly improve the overall quality of the manuscript. The manuscript is primarily explanatory and didactic, with much of the text focused on presenting grammatical concepts, examples, and Spanish phraseology; however, we expect 15% to 20% of the book to benefit from deeper rewriting and readability. This may involve rewriting sentences or paragraphs to ensure smooth syntax, natural phrasing, and engaging readability. Your final output should be accurate, polished, and compelling for readers.
Application Materials: Please submit examples of your previous proofreading or editing work (preferably book-length or long-form texts). Selected candidates may be invited to a short paid test project using a small excerpt of my manuscript, to evaluate both proofreading accuracy and rewriting quality.
Requirements:
Native English Speaker: You must possess an excellent command of the English language, with the ability to identify and improve awkward or unclear phrasing, ensuring the text is clear, cohesive, and reader-friendly. We will only consider native English speakers.
Experience: Prior experience in proofreading book-length texts is essential. Please provide specific examples of past projects where you have improved text quality, particularly with significant rewriting.
Turnaround Time: The project should be completed within 25–30 days from the start date.
Compensation:
The base budget for this project is $450, with room for negotiation based on the quality of work delivered and the depth of revisions required.
