CAPSULE — POST-PRODUCTION PROJECT BRIEF

Project Overview

Capsule is a sci-fi thriller short film set within a single, confined environment. The film follows a tense and mysterious narrative where atmosphere, performance and escalating suspense are central to the experience.

The film has been shot and is now entering a new stage of post-production. We are looking for an editor to bring a fresh perspective to the existing footage and help shape the strongest possible final cut.

The goal is to create a tense, immersive and cinematic short film that maintains audience engagement while allowing the story and performances to breathe.

Genre: Sci-Fi / Thriller
Format: Short Film
Target Runtime: Approximately 6–10 minutes
Setting: Single primary environment
Current Stage: Post-production
Footage: 1080p

Post-Production Goals

The edit should focus heavily on tension, pacing, atmosphere and character performance.

We are looking for an editor who can assess the existing footage objectively and identify opportunities to strengthen the film through editorial choices rather than simply assembling the existing cut.

The final film should feel:

* Tense
* Atmospheric
* Immersive
* Cinematic
* Character-driven
* Suspenseful
* Purposeful in its pacing

Scope of Work

The editor will be responsible for:

* Reviewing the existing footage and current edit
* Reworking the overall pacing and rhythm of the film
* Strengthening tension and suspense throughout
* Identifying opportunities to improve scene structure and flow
* Enhancing emotionally engaging character moments
* Creating stronger transitions between moments and scenes
* Using cinematic editing techniques to build atmosphere
* Refining performances through editorial timing
* Removing unnecessary or repetitive material where appropriate
* Helping establish a consistent visual rhythm
* Performing professional colour grading
* Providing suggestions for sound design and audio enhancement
* Collaborating with the director/creative team on the final creative direction

The editor will have creative freedom to suggest changes where they believe the film can be improved.

Creative Direction

The central aim of Capsule is to make the audience feel trapped within the world of the film.

Rather than relying solely on exposition, the edit should allow tension to develop through pauses, reactions, silence, timing and visual storytelling.

The pacing should feel deliberate. Moments should have room to build, while the edit should know when to accelerate and create urgency.

We are particularly interested in an editing style that draws the audience deeper into the mystery and creates a sense that something is constantly about to happen.

Visual Style

The finished film should have a dark, cinematic sci-fi thriller aesthetic.

Colour grading should enhance the atmosphere of the location while maintaining natural and believable skin tones where appropriate.

The grade should complement the story rather than overpower it.

The final visual presentation should feel cohesive and intentional despite the limitations of the original footage.

Sound Design

Sound will play an important role in creating the film’s atmosphere.

The editor is not necessarily expected to complete the entire sound mix, but should identify opportunities for:

* Ambient sound
* Room tone
* Suspense-building sound
* Strategic silence
* Audio transitions
* Sound effects
* Dialogue clarity
* Moments where sound can heighten tension

Any recommendations for additional sound design or a future sound mix are welcome.

Footage & Production Considerations

The film was captured in 1080p and was produced with some technical limitations.

The editor should therefore be comfortable working creatively with existing material and finding solutions where footage or coverage may not be perfect.

We are not looking to hide the limitations of the production, but rather to use editing, colour, sound and pacing to create the strongest possible cinematic experience from the material available.

Deliverables

The completed project should include:

* Final edited short film
* Professional colour grade
* Clean transitions and picture lock
* Final export suitable for film festival submissions and online presentation
* High-quality master export
* Any additional export formats required for festival submission, where applicable

Collaboration

This is a collaborative creative project.

The director/creative team will provide the existing edit, footage and overall creative vision. The editor will be encouraged to bring their own perspective and professional judgement to the project.

We are particularly interested in someone who isn’t afraid to say:

“This scene could work better if we did this.”

The intention is not simply to polish the existing edit, but to discover the strongest version of Capsule.

Budget & Timeline

Budget: Up to $500 AUD
Project Type: One-time freelance project
Timeline: Flexible, to be discussed with the selected editor

The budget may be negotiated depending on experience, proposed scope and the level of post-production required.

Ideal Editor

We are looking for someone with:

* Experience editing narrative short films
* A strong understanding of pacing and storytelling
* An eye for cinematic composition and rhythm
* Experience with thriller, sci-fi or dramatic material is highly desirable
* Colour grading experience
* Strong attention to detail
* The ability to work independently
* A willingness to experiment and bring creative ideas to the edit

Most importantly, we are looking for an editor who understands that editing is storytelling.

References / Portfolio

Please provide examples of previous work, particularly:

* Narrative short films
* Thriller or suspense projects
* Sci-fi projects
* Character-driven films
* Cinematic editing reels

Please include links to any relevant work when applying.

Final Creative Goal

The ultimate goal for Capsule is to transform the existing footage into a tight, atmospheric and suspenseful sci-fi thriller that feels intentional from beginning to end.

We want the audience to become immersed in the environment, connected to the characters and increasingly uncomfortable as the story unfolds.

This is an opportunity to take an existing short film and discover what it can become through the edit.
