About CoinLedger
CoinLedger helps people get their crypto taxes right. Our Done For You team handles the hardest part for clients who can't, or don't want to, do it themselves: turning years of scattered exchange, wallet and DeFi activity into accurate, defensible tax reports.
About the role
Our clients have the messiest crypto histories out there. Think of a client with five exchanges, three blockchains, a hardware wallet, some DeFi and staking, and a large amount of crypto lost to a bankrupt exchange. Resolving these issues is your specialty.
As a Crypto Reconciliation Specialist, you'll own each client's case from the kickoff call to the final tax report. We're looking for someone who already does this work for other people, at a crypto tax firm, a digital-asset accounting practice or a crypto tax software team, and who wants to do it with industry-best tools and resources.
While we are not actively hiring for this role, we encourage you to apply so that you'll be at the top of our list once we are. CoinLedger is always looking for talented professionals that are interested in joining our team. As soon as a position opens up that matches your qualifications, we will reach out.
What you'll do
Own client cases end to end
Run onboarding calls to learn each client's history, goals and concerns
Manage several cases at once and deliver each one accurately and on time
Record every judgment call and client decision so the work is defensible
Find every missing source of data
Trace deposits and withdrawals to the exchanges and wallets they came from. You'll use counterparty addresses, blockchain explorers, client transaction histories and our internal CLI tooling to find wallets or exchanges the client forgot to import, and to catch incorrectly classified transactions.
Catch incomplete imports, such as a Bitcoin hardware wallet imported by a single address instead of its xpub, a chain that never synced, or a stale exchange import
Ask clients for exactly what's missing (specific exports, API keys, wallet confirmations), with clear steps on how to download it and get it to us
Find and merge unmatched transfers, bridges and trades
Classify transactions with evidence
Classify uncategorized transactions and correct misclassified ones, including swaps, liquidity adds and removes, staking and unstaking, DeFi loans, airdrops, spam tokens and more
Decide from the transaction's structure, the evidence on the blockchain and the client's own words, not from guesswork
Make the data accurate and defensible
Price obscure tokens and NFTs at the right value for that date and time. If no credible price exists, decide on a defensible path forward.
Resolve missing cost basis and inflated capital gains at the root cause
Review the 2025 move from universal to per-wallet cost basis tracking (the Rev. Proc. 2024-28 safe harbor allocation)
Reconcile reported proceeds against each exchange's Form 1099-DA, and prepare Form 8949 and Schedule D figures
Map data from unsupported exchanges into our import template
Complete cases to our standard
A completed, accurate reconciliation that passes our quality review has:
Nothing disposed of without a cost basis
No naked deposits or withdrawals in the relevant tax years
No remaining missing cost basis or historical price warnings
No misclassified or uncategorized transactions
No unusual, inflated or unexplained capital gains or losses
No mismatches between proceeds on the 1099-DA and on our Form 8949
Every ignored transaction reviewed: spam, dust attacks and USD transactions stay ignored, and any legitimate crypto activity is brought back in
Advise clients clearly
Meet with clients at the start of their reconciliation and walk them through the process
Communicate regularly and promptly so clients always know where their case stands
Deliver final reports and walk clients through their results
Work with AI as your analyst
Tackle some tasks as appropriate with Claude Code and CoinLedger's internal AI tooling
Direct the AI, verify what it returns, and make every final judgment call and change yourself
Report product bugs and workflow friction to the engineers who build CoinLedger
What you bring
1–3+ years of hands-on crypto reconciliation or crypto tax work for individual clients (not only your own portfolio)
Fluency with block explorers (Etherscan and related explorers, Solscan, Bitcoin explorers)
An understanding of DeFi lending, liquidity pools and staking
Solid US crypto tax fundamentals: disposals vs. transfers, income at fair market value, holding periods, cost basis methods, Form 8949 and Schedule D, Form 1099-DA, and 2025 per-wallet basis tracking
Experience with crypto tax tools such as CoinLedger, Koinly, CoinTracker, TaxBit, ZenLedger or TokenTaxStrong
Excel or Google Sheets skills, including reshaping raw exchange exports
Daily use of AI tools for real analytical work, and the judgment to know when the AI is wrong. This is a requirement: our fastest specialists are the ones who lean into it.
The ability to work independently, manage your own schedule and hit deadlines
Fluent professional English, and comfort on client video calls
Based in the US and authorized to work in the US
Nice to have
CPA or EASQL, JSON-RPC or scripting experience
Experience with defunct-exchange recoveries (Celsius, FTX, BlockFi, Voyager)
This role probably isn't for you if
Your crypto experience is mainly trading or investing your own portfolio
Your crypto accounting experience is for businesses or funds rather than individuals' tax returns
You'd rather not use AI tools every day
How we work
Fully remote. You'll work with the team on Slack and Google Meet, and with clients over email and Google Meet.
No fixed or tracked hours. You set your own schedule. We don't mind when you work, as long as:
Cases are delivered on time and to a high standard of quality and accuracy
You join required team and client meetings
You stay responsive on Slack
Seasonal intensity. January through mid-April and the October extension deadline are our busiest periods.
Real product influence. You'll use CoinLedger more deeply than anyone, and your feedback goes straight to the people who build it.
How we measure success
Cases completed accurately and on time
Client satisfaction and direct client feedback: what clients say about you and your work
Compensation
This is an independent contractor role where you are responsible for paying your own taxes.
Compensation for this position depends on factors such as location and experience, but the salary for this role starts at $80,000 USD per year.
