E-Waste Management

E-waste management is the proper collection, transportation, sorting, reuse, recycling, recovery and disposal of discarded electrical and electronic equipment such as computers, phones, televisions, printers and refrigerators. E-waste contains valuable materials such as copper, aluminium, gold and plastics, but may also contain hazardous substances such as lead, mercury and cadmium. Improper disposal, open burning and unsafe recycling can pollute soil, water and air and cause health problems. Effective management follows the waste hierarchy: reduce, reuse, repair, refurbish, recycle, recover and safely dispose. Important measures include separate collection, public awareness, safe storage, formal recycling facilities, worker protection and producer responsibility. In Rwanda, e-waste management is supported by national policies and regulations that promote environmentally sound collection, recycling, reuse and disposal. Proper e-waste management protects the environment, reduces health risks, conserves resources and creates employment opportunities.
