Original Artwork for a Thoughtfully Curated Foyer Gallery
The vision
I’m looking to transform the foyer of our home into a small, thoughtfully curated art gallery. I want the space to feel collected, intentional, and artistic—with two distinctive works that introduce texture, depth, and visual interest while complementing the artwork already displayed elsewhere in our home.
I’m replacing two existing botanical prints on either side of a doorway. Rather than simply finding two coordinating decorative pieces, I want to introduce original artwork with character, craftsmanship, and a distinct artistic point of view.
I’m drawn to artwork with genuine dimension and tactile qualities. This could include sculptural fiber or textile art, punch needle, woven materials, textured plaster, raised mixed media, or other original techniques. I’m also open to abstract compositions incorporating organic shapes, layered surfaces, and dimensional relief.
I’m particularly interested in artwork that interacts with light and creates natural shadows. I want to see and appreciate the physical construction of the work—not simply a printed image that imitates texture.
Authentic materials, physical dimension, and thoughtful craftsmanship are essential. I do not want flat, mass-produced prints or artwork that simply creates the illusion of texture in a photograph.
Aesthetic and color direction
* A warm, restrained, earthy palette: ivory, warm cream, mushroom, putty, taupe, cocoa, charcoal, and subtle terracotta.
* Organic movement, irregular forms, layered textures, and thoughtful composition.
* A balance of softness and visual depth, with enough character to complement the more expressive abstract artwork elsewhere in our home.
* Natural materials and finishes are preferred.
The artwork should feel sophisticated and understated without being predictable or overly neutral.
Composition
The two pieces should feel related, but they should not be identical or look like a matching set. Think siblings, not twins—two individual works that share an artistic sensibility while each having its own composition and personality.
I’m especially interested in pieces that feel collected and considered, with an artistic point of view. I want to avoid overly repetitive patterns, predictable geometric designs, or generic neutral wall décor.
Space and dimensions
The artwork will hang on either side of a doorway in our foyer. The space has warm terracotta brick flooring, warm neutral walls, substantial white trim, and dark wood accents.
We would like to reuse our existing frames, so new framing is not needed.
Existing frame dimensions:
* Overall frame size: approximately 19¾″ wide × 27½″ high.
* Visible artwork opening: approximately 18″ wide × 26″ high.
* Two existing frames, with the same intended artwork dimensions.
Please design or size the artwork to fit these existing frames. We can provide photographs of the frames and additional measurements if needed.
Because we are interested in dimensional artwork, please also advise on the depth requirements and whether the glass would need to be removed to accommodate the finished pieces.
Budget and project details
Our anticipated budget is $500–$700 for both pieces, including shipping. We have some flexibility for an exceptional proposal, but would appreciate artists keeping this range in mind when submitting.
Please provide a proposed price for the pair and include:
* Examples of actual completed work, preferably at a similar scale.
* Close-up photographs or videos that clearly show the texture, dimension, and construction.
* Materials and techniques used.
* Custom design and sizing options.
* Confirmation that the work can be created to fit our existing frames.
* Estimated production and shipping timelines.
I’m open to working with an artist on a custom commission if that allows us to create two distinctive pieces that feel cohesive within the space.
The overall goal is to create a small, thoughtfully curated art gallery in our foyer ~ an inviting introduction to the artwork and aesthetic throughout our home.
