Architectural 3D Modeling Commission – Summary
Project: Ongpin Street, Binondo, Manila
Concept: The Market as an Oracle: Time, Perception, and Parasitic Architecture
1. Project Overview
Revitalize Ongpin Street while preserving its historical, cultural, and commercial identity.
Introduce parasitic architecture that attaches to, extends from, or occupies existing buildings and underutilized spaces.
Improve pedestrian circulation, accessibility, environmental comfort, and public interaction.
Retain the existing urban fabric rather than replacing it with entirely new structures.
2. Central Design Concept: Movement and Stillness
Explore the contrast between Binondo's continuous movement and opportunities for people to pause.
Use photography, particularly Henri Cartier-Bresson's Decisive Moment, as a design reference.
Translate photography into architecture through:
Framing views and encounters.
Creating moments of pause.
Highlighting overlooked architectural details.
Responding to pedestrian movement.
Preserving cultural identity while accommodating change.
Architecture should make everyday market experiences more meaningful and accessible.
3. Deaf-Friendly Architecture
Integrate DeafSpace principles into the design.
Visual connectivity: Clear sightlines and visually permeable boundaries.
Communication spaces: Widened areas for signing, face-to-face interaction, and gathering.
Lighting: Consistent illumination for facial expressions and sign-language visibility.
Wayfinding: Clear signage, colors, symbols, and recognizable landmarks.
Inclusive circulation: Accessible pathways, ramps, crossings, and entrances.
Ensure Deaf users remain connected to the market instead of being isolated from its activities.
4. Parasitic Architecture
Use existing buildings as hosts for new architectural interventions.
Possible interventions:
Facade attachments: Canopies, shading devices, extensions, and modular signage.
Vertical interventions: Elevated walkways, bridges, rooftop spaces, and upper-level connections.
Micro-spaces: Small seating areas, waiting zones, communication spaces, and commercial extensions.
Environmental interventions: Green facades, planting systems, natural ventilation, and rain protection.
Design considerations:
Minimize demolition.
Preserve existing architectural character.
Use modular and adaptable components.
Clearly distinguish existing structures from proposed additions.
Consider structural attachment, fire safety, drainage, maintenance, and regulations.
5. Time-Based Architecture and Market Rhythms
Treat Ongpin as a constantly changing environment rather than a static streetscape.
Study how activities change throughout the day.
Possible design responses:
Foldable and retractable structures.
Modular and movable seating.
Temporary market extensions.
Organized delivery and pedestrian zones.
Flexible dining and waiting spaces.
Time-responsive lighting and signage.
Important: Show how the actual use and configuration of spaces change throughout the day, not just changes in lighting or sky conditions.
6. Conceptual Systems
Three conceptual systems will guide the architectural design:
A. Tarot – Spatial Generator
Use tarot to interpret site conditions and generate design opportunities through four categories:
FLOW: Movement, circulation, bottlenecks, and transitions.
TRADE: Shops, transactions, deliveries, and commercial activities.
MEMORY: Heritage, culture, and historical landmarks.
PERCEPTION: DeafSpace, visual communication, sensory awareness, and moments of pause.
B. Co-Star Astrology – Time and Relationships
Explore cycles and changing conditions.
Map overlapping activities and spatial relationships.
Develop time-based activity diagrams.
Inspire adaptable and layered architectural interventions.
C. Feng Shui – Spatial Planning
Study orientation, circulation, and spatial balance.
Organize entrances, pathways, and thresholds.
Balance active and quiet spaces.
Explore the relationship between open and enclosed spaces.
These systems should inform actual architectural decisions rather than serve as decorative themes.
7. Environmental and Public Realm Improvements
Improve shade and rain protection.
Introduce planting where feasible.
Improve pedestrian circulation.
Organize queues, deliveries, dining, and waiting areas.
Provide resting and social interaction spaces.
Improve nighttime visibility.
Address waste management and drainage.
Encourage cultural exploration and longer visits to local businesses.
8. Overall Architectural Design Logic
CULTURAL AND SPATIAL ROOTS
Tarot + Co-Star Astrology + Feng Shui
SITE INTERPRETATION
Existing buildings + activities + pedestrian movement + accessibility
DESIGN GENERATORS
Flow + Trade + Memory + Perception
ARCHITECTURAL STRATEGIES
Parasitic structures + Deaf-friendly circulation + adaptable spaces + environmental improvements
DESIGN OUTCOME
An accessible, connected, adaptable, and culturally grounded Ongpin Street.
9. Required 3D Modeling Deliverables
A. Existing Site Model
Accurate representation of the selected Ongpin Street project area.
Existing building masses and heights.
Street geometry, sidewalks, and intersections.
Major facades and rooflines.
Storefronts, entrances, signs, and awnings.
Relevant commercial and heritage landmarks.
Street furniture, utilities, and environmental features.
B. Proposed Architectural Model
Parasitic structures integrated into existing buildings.
New circulation connections and spatial extensions.
Deaf-friendly communication and gathering spaces.
Visual wayfinding systems.
Time-responsive architectural elements.
Environmental and public-realm improvements.
10. Editable Model Files – Final Commission Requirements
The commission is specifically for editable 3D model files, not rendered images.
Request the following:
Native, editable 3D model file.
Organized geometry and layers/components.
Textures and materials.
Linked assets and external references.
Existing site model and proposed design model.
Export files, if necessary for compatibility with other software.
The software and native file format must be agreed upon before production.
Important instruction to the modeler: The priority is an editable architectural model that can be continuously modified and developed throughout the thesis. Rendered perspectives are optional and are not a substitute for the editable files.
